Costume Care 101: Cleaning Up Before (and After) Halloween

Halloween Means Big Laundry Loads

Between bulky costumes, group and team outfits, and the inevitable candy-and-face-paint aftermath, Halloween puts real strain on laundry at home. Capes, inflatable suits, foam armor, and layered group costumes rarely fit — or spin evenly — in a standard home washer. That's exactly the kind of load Splash Laundry KC's large self-serve machines are built for.

Before the Big Night: Prepping Costumes

If a costume has been sitting in a closet or storage bin since last year, give it a wash before trick-or-treating — dust, must, and leftover makeup from last Halloween can linger in the fabric. A few tips:

  • Check the care tag first. Costumes with glued-on trim, sequins, or foam pieces are often better off spot-cleaned than machine washed.
  • Use a large machine for bulky or layered pieces. Group costumes, inflatable suits, and anything with padding need room to tumble freely — cramming them into an undersized home washer leaves them smelling musty and looking flat.
  • Wash group and team costumes together in one of our big-load machines so everyone's ready at the same time, instead of running several small loads at home.

After the Big Night: The Candy, Face Paint & Mud Reset

The day after Halloween usually brings a pile of laundry: melted chocolate smears, sticky candy residue, face paint, and grass-stained knees from trick-or-treating after dark. A few quick tips before you wash:

  • Treat chocolate and candy stains before they set. Scrape off the excess, treat with a stain pre-treater, and wash in the warmest water the fabric allows.
  • Face and body paint comes out easier with a pre-soak. Most Halloween makeup is oil-based, so a short soak with a grease-cutting detergent before washing helps keep it from setting into the fabric.
  • Wash costumes separately from everyday clothes if any paint or dye is still transferring, so bright colors don't bleed.

Skip the Pile — Bring It to Splash

If Halloween week has you drowning in extra laundry on top of the usual routine, you don't have to handle it all at home. Drop a load off for wash-and-fold and we'll have it back to you clean, folded, and ready — or schedule a pickup and delivery run so costumes, candy-stained clothes, and everything else never even make it into your car. Self-serve customers are always welcome to use our large-capacity machines in-store for the bulky, oversized loads a home washer just can't handle.

A Members Reminder

Splash Laundry KC members already have wash-and-fold and delivery built into their plan — Halloween season is a good reminder of how much time that saves when laundry piles up fast. Not a member yet? Ask our team in-store about which plan fits your household.
